This is a broad question because people need and use a miter saw for different reasons. Some people are contractors/carpenters and may have different needs then someone who is a hobbyist. Below is a quick and dirty explanation of the two and why they may need something different.

Contractors/carpenters are most likely moving from job to job and will require a saw that can handle a lot of usage. In this instance one would need something that is more heavy duty, flexible, & easy to relocate. Based off feedback from contractors/carpenters, I would recommend getting a 12″ or 10″ sliding compound miter saw like the 10″ Hitachi C10FSH or the 12″ Milwaukee 6955-20. If these two are out of your price range then you may not want to get a sliding compound miter.
Hobbyist most likely are not moving around as often as a carpenter who has to relocate his/her miter saw to different locations and may or may not have as much usage. Also, the size of a hobbyists’ projects may be smaller then a carpenters would be as well. In this instance I would say you could do away with a sliding miter saw and stick with a stationary compound miter. In my opinion, I would still consider a 10″ because you never know if you are going to be handling larger projects and if so you will be covered with a saw that can handle it. My suggestions to the hobbyist are the 10″ Hitachi C10FCE2 or the 10″ DEWALT DW713

Please keep in mind these are just my opinions from user feedback and a very general stereotype of the needs for both groups.
